My Kids Say the Darndest Things!

"...because I don't want to drink that!"

This is what I heard from the other side of the lavatory door at Wil's recent doctor's visit.  While Daddy was helping Wil to give his urine sample he began crying.  John asked him what all the fuss was about—after all this was the easy part.  Wil looked at the cup and then up at John then exclaimed, "I'm crying because I don't want to drink that!"  As per Wil's overly literal interpretation of most situations: cups are for drinking!

"I don't like to tell you this, but..."

This is how the boys deliver bad news these days.  I don't know if it's intentional, but as far as I'm concerned it softens the blow, regardless of what follows.

"Look! A limbo!"

As we were driving home from our visit to the Intrepid today we passed several limousines.  Every time we saw another Wil would shout, "Look! A limbo!"  Although I generally make an effort to gently correct their misspeak, I didn't have the heart to point this one out. With their vocabulary growing every day, these little word mix-ups rarely happen anymore and serve as a welcome reminder of their sweet innocence.

"Good-bye! See you later!"

If you've ever been lucky enough to be on the receiving end of Wil's good-bye ritual, you've undoubtedly heard these words ... in exactly this order.  In fact, you know that he is meticulous in how he doles out his now famous good-bye.  He never changes the order or skips a step .. never!  It goes like this: kiss, hug, high-five, pound, air kiss, blow, "good-bye" and "see you later."  It's enough to melt your heart!

"Know how much I love you?"

Of the numerous questions my boys pose every day this is the one I never get tired of being asked.  "How much?", I inquire as I await one of their many expressions of love.  Some of my favorites are: as big as a shark's body; as long as our road; taller than Daddy; higher than the moon or wider than the gallaxy.  "That's a lot of love!" I always say.  They'll realize some day that nothing can quantify unconditional love, but for now I deeply (deeper than the ocean) appreciate their effort and creativity.
